Bannockburn P-12 College works in partnership with CERES Community Environment Park to help us become an environmentally sustainable school.
We are currently working towards achieving 5 star recognition from ResourceSmart Schools which is an award-winning Victorian Government program. During 2018 we have been working on the Core Module which involves establishing sustainability within our school. Other modules to follow will include Energy, Waste, Water and Biodiversity.
We have an enthusiastic Student Green Team with representatives across the school that are leading the charge on initiatives such as recycling, Nude Food and Garden Club. We also have plans to integrate our worm farm into learning, introduce compost bins and add a vegetable garden into our grounds. All of these will help to educate the students about the sustainability process, the notion of paddock to plate and the importance of nurturing our environment.
The Student Green Team have been busy working on a range of initiatives this year. We have made displays across the school to teach our community to use the appropriate bins. This will help us reduce our landfill and encourage more recycling for a sustainable future!
We have implemented the Nude Food initiative at Bannockburn College. Students bring their food to school in reusable containers in attempt to decrease the amount of landfill we are producing. Not only does it educate students on the positive impact that reusable containers have on the environment but it also promotes healthy eating. Nude Food empowers students to make conscious choices about what they eat, and encourages them to think about their impact on the environment.
Our eager Garden Club consists of students from Green Team and other students across the school. We work on keeping our yard as sustainable as possible, removing rubbish, weeding and tending to our vegetable garden when it is built!
We also entered our Nude Food initiative into the Healthy Heroes competition with the winner to be announced at the end of 2018, fingers crossed!
Our students are so passionate about Sustainability two of our year 5 students took it upon themselves to complete a rubbish audit across the school and record their findings to present to Learning Communities across the school.
The Green Team will continue to work on new initiatives that arise to ensure we continue to grow on our sustainability journey.
Bannockburn College also has a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP), which outlines our commitment to sustainability. It highlights our achievements to date and a plan for what we would like to achieve in the future.
