Encouraging students to think critically & engage with real-world issues

At Bannockburn P-12 College, the Humanities curriculum fosters a deep understanding of our societies, economies, environments, and historical events. Our Humanities curriculum encourages students to think critically, engage with real-world issues, and develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of our world.

Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, our Humanities programme from Foundation to Year 8 covers Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography, and History, equipping students with critical thinking skills and a global perspective. Students develop essential skills such as historical inquiry, data interpretation, ethical reasoning, and the ability to evaluate different perspectives. Through engaging learning experiences such as incursions and excursions, students develop an awareness of the forces that shape our world and gain the knowledge needed to become active and informed citizens.

In Years 9 and 10, students have the opportunity to explore their interests through a range of Humanities electives such as legal studies, global economics, and Australia and the World Wars. These electives allow students to personalise their learning and refine their research, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Students also develop their ability to construct well-reasoned arguments, assess sources for reliability and bias, and communicate their ideas effectively through written and verbal formats—essential skills for both academic and real-world applications.

For Years 11 and 12, Bannockburn P-12 College offers VCE pathways in Geography, Business Management, and Sociology. These subjects provide a strong foundation for further study and a wide range of career pathways. In these courses, students enhance their ability to interpret and apply data, understand complex social and economic systems, and engage in critical discussions about contemporary global and societal issues. By developing these skills, students are well-prepared for tertiary education, the workforce, and active civic participation in an ever-evolving world.
