Languages

Essential to developing cross-cultural awareness and understanding

Bannockburn College proudly offers both Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and French language programs from Prep to VCE. The learning of a language is essential to develop cross-cultural awareness and understanding.

At Bannockburn College we believe that the learning of another language enhances our student’s cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills and confidence. In addition, it enables students to develop a broader understanding of another language and culture, and how this varies from their own. Studying additional languages builds on student’s literacy skills in English.

Language learning in the college consists of two sessions per week in Early Years (Prep-Grade 4) which is one session each of Auslan and French for the year. In Middle Years Grades 5/6 students undertake two sessions per week in a semester then rotate languages. In Year 7 students undertake three 50 minute sessions per semester then rotate languages. At Year 8 students will choose either Auslan or French to study for 3 sessions per week for the full year. At Years 9-12 language becomes an elective subject and is delivered by passionate teachers over five sessions per week over the course of the year.
