An holistic approach to food education
Food Technology at Bannockburn P-12 College is a multi-curricular program that has a holistic approach to food education. Students learn the importance of eating seasonally, making healthy food choices and the core skills of being able to prepare food safely and hygienically.
In Food Studies students focus on nutrition through life and eating well for the future. Students look at the physical and chemical changes when cooking food, investigate food related diseases and food intolerances and how science plays a big part in why food tastes, smells and looks so good! The Indigenous and International topic helps students develop and expand on a range of skills in the kitchen. Students focus on international cuisine, which explores food and culture influences from Asia and Europe. Students explore Indigenous culture and customs, learning about traditional Aboriginal diets and cooking methods, while trialling indigenous flavours in their own meals. The Food Influencer topic builds on student knowledge to consider how media impacts healthy eating choices, explores fad diets and the influence social media has on food consumption and trends.
Food Catering is a hands-on experience of producing fast paced meals in a hospitality style environment. Students plan menus, recipe cost, order food and prepare meals for customers. This class mimics a real working situation and includes investigating trends and ingredients, designing seasonal menus and developing hospitality standard skills in service. Students will build upon their basic culinary skills and cooking techniques through meal planning while having the opportunity to use new and advanced technology.
